In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

During his PhD research, Dr. Herrid reported for the first time that the influence of leptin on embryonic development appears to be dependent on concentration, the developmental stage of the embryo and the animal species. The addition of leptin into culture media can significantly increase the percentage of blastocyst formation (Herrid et al., Reproduction 2006), and this has since been used in many laboratories around the world to increase the efficiency of current IVF technologies (Li et al., Theriogenology 2012).

Testis Stem Cell Transplantion

Cattle in Pasture

Dr. Herrid was the key scientist in the team that first demonstrated a proof of concept of testis stem cell transplantation in cattle (Herrid et al., Reproduction 2006), sheep (Herrid et al., BOR, 2009) and camel (Herrid et al., Theriogenology 2018). This discovery has been described as a rapid means to disseminate superior genetics and is likely to revolutionize the stud stock industry. In 2013 and 2014, Dr. Herrid was invited by Australian NHMRC to review grant applications in the area of stem cell biology.

We offer training in stem cell isolation, enrichment and rete-testis injection (Herrid et al., Reprod Fertil Dev. 2009).

Embryo Vitrification

We devised and commercialized a vitrification kit for camelids species (Gulf News, 2018), with about 50% pregnancy rate (Herrid et al., 2018 and Skidmore et al., 2020). With a significant modification, vitrified cloned cattle embryos produced about 15% pregnancy rate.

Transgenic Animal Production

DNA Strand

We have an in-house and highly effective protocol for transfecting different types of stem cells. With the combination of tesits germ cell transfection, transplantation and breeding, the team has produced transgenic offspring via transgenic sperm (Dong et al., Sci Rep. 2017). In comparison to the traditional methodologies, the advantages of this method are (Herrid et al. Anim Biotechnol. 2013):

1) Avoid developmental defect;

2) Reduce the time to produce transgenic animals (IVF and predetermination of transgenic embryos);

3) Efficient - no embryonic stem cells in livestock animals;

4) Endless source of transgenic sperm and embryos

Automated Heat Detection in Cows

The monitoring device is attached to the cow by a neck collar and provide a real-time information of estrous cycles. Utilizing phone network , the system can provide farmers the detailed information of heat process of each individual cow in their mobile phones. Other advantages of this

product are that it has long battery life (5 -10 years), long distance coverage (5 -20 Km) and provision of animal movement and disease status. For example, farmers can assess pastures conditions by monitoring cow activities, without a need to physically inspect the grazing condition of that pasture. Furthermore, the device can be easily connected to an autodrafting system and is able to sperate the ones for AI or ET.
